The Diois, the region around the little town of Die markes the transition from the prealps massif of Vercors and the Provence, from the alps to the Rhone valley. All these neighbourhoods mixted here are influences: so you can find some (provencal) lavender fields beyond big Walnuttrees (from Grenoble – the olives grow 50 km more in the south). Vercheny is situated at 350 m, but the top of the Glandasse is over 2000 m high.
As lot of transition countries, the Diois is not very well-known and good identified. With about 1200 inhabitants on 1500 km² it is sparsely populated. The ten (independant) boroughs of the Roanne valley count between 144 inhabitants in St. Nazaire le Désert and 1 inhabitant (the mayor !) in Rochfourchat.
This means that there is certainly a lot of place to hike, but equipement and facilities can be quite far away.

Down from Saillans, the Drôme valley gets larger and joins the Rhône Valley: Fruit plantations, Wineyards… and big traffic arteries and industrial areas. The next towns are Crest (15 minutes from Vercheny), where you can climb to the old tower and visit the old city; you can count 45 and 60 minutes to join Valence or Montélimar from the holiday house.

Already „Provence“ or not yet „Provence“ ? In Vercheny you can find lavender fields and cicadas, sun and petanque-players, but no olive oil and big summer heats. The real Provence starts near Nyons (1h30 on nice little roads), Dieulefit and Vaison la Romaine. But from the top of the “Trois Becs” the Mount Ventoux seems so close…

The mountains bording the Drôme valley by the north belong to the natural parc of Vercors.
You can easily get there by the Col de Rousset (50 minutes drive and lots of curves) or by Beaufort sur Gervanne. Fantastic rockwalls, canyons, caves, big fir forests… a wild natural landscape. And there are also the places of the french Résistance
